Glowsign

A glowsign is a piece of transparent plastic that is lit along its edge or edges. Because the sign is thin and the light source is at the edges most of the light hasn't got enough angle of attack to escape the plastic anywhere ells then at the edges. Just like a fibre cable. Although, if you carve something on the surface of the plastic you create a new edge which allows some light to escape. The result will be that the engraving will glow.

Glowsigns is nothing new to the modding community, nor to the normal community. Today you can practically see a glowsign in at least one store per mall where it usually says "Cash register", "Service" or similar. Hey, even my gas station has fancy glowsigns!

So, what can you do with a glowsign?
Whatever you want. Send a message what's best or what's not. Build it inside a 5.25" or a 3.5" bay with your nick on it. There are many configurations to a glowsign.
The configuration I'll be using is the stand-alone model powered through USB.

To begin with, you need a piece of acrylic or plexi to make the sign of. I used this piece of plexi. It's 15 cm long, 10 cm wide and 0.5 cm thick. As you can see the protective film is still attached to it, which it should, as long as possible.

I was going to engrave the Rautermods logo and the text "Rautermods". To ensure nice, clean and straight lines I printed out a reversed picture of the logo and the text and then cut along the edges. The best illumination is created by engraving on the backside of the sign.

Because I couldn't find a marker that would stay on the protective film I had to cut the guide lines on to the plexi. They proved to be a little hard to see when I carved, but it wasn't a major problem.

This picture shows the engraving when it's done. I was forced to carve a box around the text because I hade made a mistake when carving the first letter.
